Considered the greatest Hungarian lyric poet of the twentieth century, Endre Ady was born in Erdmindgzent, Hungary, on November 22, 1877. He introduced new vigor into the stagnant, conventional poetry of the turn of the century. Ady's early poetry was revolutionary in both language and content and offended literary and political conservatives. In show more his later writings, prior to and during World War I, he voiced his anguish at social injustice and the carnage of war. In addition to writing poetry that sprung from social and political themes, Ady wrote poetry dealing with love and religion. Ady died in Budapest on January 27, 1919.
