Young magician Skeeve is forced into a high-stakes, dragon poker game, winning against a champion but ending up with a pint-sized, chaotic ward named Markie as an IOU. Meanwhile, jealous opponents hire a lethal Character Assassin to eliminate Skeeve and his mentor, Aahz.
Yet another clever Myth Adventures novel with a bit of a myth-tery thrown in, though I figured it out pretty early on. What I still love about the series is how the characters have some depth and value, even if some of it isn't politically correct. However, I still maintain this series of books still stands the test of time, especially if you want an entertaining and quick read.
This is one of my favorite Myth books, because I think it encapsulates the zeitgeist of the series, and puts the relationships of the characters into sharp relief, and demonstrates the dilemma of keeping an ethical position in what are basically un-ethical situations.
Not quite as much humour in this book as some of the previous ones but a fun read nonetheless. We get to see another side to most of the main characters, more sentiment instead of the usual bluster.
No big surprises to the main storyline though. It's clear how the card game will go and the identity of the "Axe" was blindingly obvious.

I have always enjoyed fantasy novels and I have a fond place in my heart for campy pun filled fantasy and Robert Asprin definitely writes books that fit the bill. His books remain good although they do not quite stand up to the test of time.
Sometimes you just need a dumb, simple, funny and amusing book to read.
This falls in that category extremely well.
Skeeve takes on a poker champion, a character assassin and is all set to start Myth Inc.
Pretty good for one book :)

Sorry but out of the series, this is my least favorite. Just doesn't seem believable to me that all of the characters don't see what's in front of them.
It is a quick enjoyable read though if you don't look too far into it though.

Robert Lynn Asprin was born June 28, 1946 in St. Johns, Michigan to Daniel and Lorraine Asprin. Asprin attended the University of Michigan from 1964-65. In 1965, Robert served in the U.S. Army until mid-1966. Asprin then began a career as an accountant, moving up to cost accountant in a small subsidiary of the Xerox Corporation in Ann Arbor in show more 1976. In 1975, Asprin began working upon a science-fiction novel called Cold Cash War. Asprin sold this idea to St. Martin's Press and soon found himself a published writer. When other publishers approached him for a second novel, Asprin revealed that he had written up a draft of a comedy-fantasy work originally entitled The Demon and I, but they felt that he shouldn't stray far from the science-fiction of his first work. So Asprin began work on The Bug Wars. While working on The Bug Wars, Asprin was approached by Donning Publishing, and asked if he had a submission for their new publishing house, Starblaze. Asprin showed them The Demon and I, which Donning quickly accepted. At the last minute the title was changed to the familiar Another Fine Myth, which became quite popular. With that, Asprin quit his job and started his career as a fulltime freelance writer. Asprin wrote and edited over 50 books. He died of a myocardial infarction at home in his bed on May 22, 2008.
