Description

Robert Asprin's classic fantasy series, now available in eBook! With cover and interior illustrations by Phil Foglio! A Detective's W Skeeve needs more than magic to solve a matter of Murder and Myth-tery. He's in a real pickle this time. His green, scaly partner, Aahz, has disappeared, and it looks like foul play. Finding Aahz ought to be a snap for a talented magician like Skeeve, especially with a sassy apprentice and a dumb-but-brawny bodyguard along for the ride. The trouble is, they're show more sleuthing in another dimension that makes the Bazaar on Deva look tame! Disappearing Act! "Banishment from the Bazaar is out!" Aahz snarled. "Not only would it destroy our reputations, I'm not about to get run out of the Bazaar and our home over something as idiotic as this!" "We're going to have to go after them." I sighed. "Half right," Aahz corrected. "I'm going to have to go after them. It's too dangerous for someone at your level of magical skill." "My level? How about you? "Experience," he said loftily. "I'm used to doing this, and you aren't. End of argument." "'End of argument' nothing! Just how to you propose to leave me behind if I don't agree?" "That's easy," Aahz grinned. "See who's standing in the corner?" I turned to look where he was pointing, and that's the last thing I remembered for a long time. show less

With a Pervect, a Troll, a Trollope, a talking stone gargoyle, an apprentice, two Mobster bodyguards, and a pet dragon, what is missing from Skeeve’s band? A friendly neighborhood vampire and werewolf, of course! And Skeeve need not even go to the corner store, just open his back door to find a new terrifying dimension. Like a fast-paced improv skit, Asprin keeps the reader on his toes following Skeeve’s shenanigans. The MYTH series of episodic quests and pranks create a comedic riot that is a combination of British and American humor. With melodrama that knows it is over the top, these upbeat and whimsical romps will leave you feeling a little waggish.

Whenever life is getting too stressful, I go see what Skeeve has been up to. In show more Myth-ing Person, Skeeve learns that a few bad tourists can give a whole species a bad reputation – just ask the vampires or werewolves. Little Myth Marker teaches Skeeve the importance of knowing what marker he is accepting when playing Dragon Poker. The M.Y.T.H. series is a light-hearted romp into a fantasy world where wordplay and silliness are standard fare.

Probably the weakest one in the series thus far, but I believe the key point is about humility.

However, some interesting views on those who are in leadership roles and whether or not those people suffer from nerves, self-doubt, and if they're just faking confidence.
Kinda cute quick read, but only for die-hard fans of the series. After the first book, the rest are pretty shoddily written.

I have always enjoyed fantasy novels and I have a fond place in my heart for campy pun filled fantasy and Robert Asprin definitely writes books that fit the bill. His books remain good although they do not quite stand up to the test of time.
A childhood favorite re-visited.

Is the story as good as I remember? – Yes

What ages would I recommend it too? – Twelve and up. While ten to twelve might enjoy it, there are many ideas they will not understand. Though, they will certainly get many of the jokes.

Length? – Most of a day’s read.

Characters? – Memorable, several characters.

Setting? – Fantasy, alternate dimensions.

Written approximately? – 1984.

Does the story leave questions in the readers mind? – Ready to read more.

Any issues the author (or a more recent publisher) should cover? No.

Short storyline: Skeeve, Aahz, and associates are just getting started with their new business on Deva. When three thieves escape through a hidden door behind a tapestry in the waiting show more room, Aahz has to go after them, or risk the whole group being banned from Deva permanently. This door leads to an interesting magic-less dimension where vampires are the norm, and humans are not. It takes all of their brain, brawn, and skill to rescue Aahz, capture the three thieves, and return them to the Deva authorities.

Notes for the reader: In this story, this author takes the emotions of his characters seriously. The characters don’t just race through the story full of action without emotion. The author realized the importance of the reader connecting to the characters by giving us the emotions, and even the reasons behind those sometimes odd emotions for the situation. While the first few times, it is a shock to the system to actually read of a character having an emotion, soon, it just becomes an enhancement to the story. In fact, when the lack of emotions by the main character becomes apparent in a later story, even that is noted by all the characters, until it is resolved.

The magician Skeeve must track down his partner, Aahz, who has vanished into a dangerous, unfamiliar dimension. Accompanied by his apprentice and a brawny bodyguard, Skeeve navigates a bizarre, upside-down world to solve this mysterious disappearance, which appears to be foul play.
Skeeve has to rescue Aahz, outwit a world of vampires and lose a hot chick to a some annoying con artist.
All in one book.

Robert Lynn Asprin was born June 28, 1946 in St. Johns, Michigan to Daniel and Lorraine Asprin. Asprin attended the University of Michigan from 1964-65. In 1965, Robert served in the U.S. Army until mid-1966. Asprin then began a career as an accountant, moving up to cost accountant in a small subsidiary of the Xerox Corporation in Ann Arbor in show more 1976. In 1975, Asprin began working upon a science-fiction novel called Cold Cash War. Asprin sold this idea to St. Martin's Press and soon found himself a published writer. When other publishers approached him for a second novel, Asprin revealed that he had written up a draft of a comedy-fantasy work originally entitled The Demon and I, but they felt that he shouldn't stray far from the science-fiction of his first work. So Asprin began work on The Bug Wars. While working on The Bug Wars, Asprin was approached by Donning Publishing, and asked if he had a submission for their new publishing house, Starblaze. Asprin showed them The Demon and I, which Donning quickly accepted. At the last minute the title was changed to the familiar Another Fine Myth, which became quite popular. With that, Asprin quit his job and started his career as a fulltime freelance writer. Asprin wrote and edited over 50 books. He died of a myocardial infarction at home in his bed on May 22, 2008.
