Infernal Tramps: Tales of Weird Terror

Weird fiction was my entry point into horror, and it's always been one of my favorite subgenres. I've read stuff that was great, I've read stuff that dragged, but I don't think I've ever read anything that I could honestly call charming. Until now. Don't get me wrong, there are some wonderfully grotesque moments, but I laughed just as often as I cringed. The storytelling is also exceptionally restrained for the genre. Nothing is overexplained, but I could still conjure a very vivid image with each story. There were a couple of stories that I wanted more from, but not because anything crucial was missing or I felt like there were any plotholes—I just wanted more. And that's how I think a good story should leave you feeling.

My only note show more of caution to prospective readers is that the language might be a little overwrought for some—it's right on the edge of being a gimmick—but that was part of the fun for me. I loved the use of language, the alliteration, and the clever moments of wordplay. I did have to whip out a translator a couple of times, but I think there's enough context in the prose that you could easily rely on the context clues if you wanted to. show less

What an eclectic collection of short horror stories! I especially enjoyed "Meeting Ivor Voelman" and "If Promises Were Meant to Keep". These stories are perfect for those who like reading diverse horror. Definitely recommend!
