This is my second Kyle Winkler book, and if anything, its even better than Ship of Death. Though, to be fair, I think for the mainstream reader Ship of Death is *likely* more accessible.
This Odyssey meets pulp detective noir through the lens of horrifying weird fiction is an absolute treat. Our protagonists relives some of his namesake's Odyssey-esque journey into another world/universe that *feels* like an afterlife though really isn't after being hired to locate a series of missing people who disappeared from the world after entering a trailer in an isolated trailer park. To give much in the way of plot detail is to give away a lot of what is enjoyable about the book. But besides the (repeated, nested) journey to a sort of underworld show more mirroring the character's namesake, there is repetition of travel to and from various locations as well overall repetition of certain themes, concepts and events that helped to structurally mirror the Odyssey. I have seem some reviewers criticize the call and response and repetition in dialogue, internal and external, (as well as the lack of the quotation marks), but I think they've missed the the point, in that it is drawing stylistically from pulp detective noir and classics. Our characters, including our antagonists, are all drawn in incredibly interesting ways, and there are some really touching moments that really reflect the brotherhood and love of Odysseus' companions...Elpenor obviously loves Hugh long before its stated, and vice versa.
One of the most interesting and best books I've read this year!
