I received a copy of this ebook as part of LibraryThing Early Reviewers.

This opens like a Gatsby retelling and then immediately makes it clear it has no interest in staying in that lane.

It takes the original themes—wealth, longing, moral collapse—and layers them with eroticism, modern excess, and a much more overtly chaotic emotional register. The result is ambitious, occasionally compelling, and at times slightly overwhelming in a way that feels structural rather than incidental.

The choice to reframe Nick Carraway as Nicolina fundamentally changes the narrative lens, but also produces a tone that can feel unusually heightened, especially in its first-person intimacy. At times it reads like a deliberate collision between literary show more pastiche and contemporary erotic fiction, which may or may not be to every reader’s taste.

There are interesting ideas here about power, desire, and reinterpretation of literary myth, but I found the tonal consistency difficult to settle into. The writing oscillates between lyrical imitation of the original and more explicit modern sensibilities, which can create a sense of dissonance rather than synthesis.

An ambitious reinterpretation that I respect more than I fully enjoyed.

Nicolina Gatsby was an entertaining read. While this modern version of the great Gatsby brought a new spin on a well loved classic, some of the subplots, at times seemed excessive (too much family drama in my opinion) otherwise I felt this was a solid read, interesting and creative. I’d recommend to other readers that enjoy this genre.
