This was a truly unique book; I've never read anything else like it. I was very impressed. Dateline: Troy re-tells The Iliad in a shorter form and more modern language, and accompanies the story with real life contemporary newspaper articles to demonstrate how the themes of the myth are still relevant in today's society. This is a great way to get kids interested in Greek myths, and will be sure to provoke much discussion.
RGG: Very clear, concise accounting of the Trojan War. Appreciate the effort to make connections to modern events, but some of them are a bit obtuse.
This book is excellent for teaching using information resources. The author takes the story of the civilization of Troy and the Trojan war and relates the incidents before, during, and after the war with current news events. The book opens with Hecuba, Queen of Troy, crying out in her sleep from a bad dream. The king sends for a diviner of dreams, the Priest of Apollo, who interprets her dreams. This scene connects to a leak that Nancy and Ronald Reagan consulted astrologers and Nancy believed that events are dictated by the stars. The author places well-researched news articles and events along side the events that unfold during the story of the Trojan War.

Paul Fleischman was born in Monterey, California on September 5, 1952. His father is fellow children's author, Sid Fleischman. He attended the University of California at Berkeley for two years, from 1970 to 1972. He dropped out to go on a cross-country train/bicycle trip and along the way took care of a 200-year-old house in New Hampshire. He show more eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of New Mexico in 1977. Fleischman has written over 25 books for children and young adults including award winners such as Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices, Newberry Medal in 1989; Graven Images, Newberry Honor; Bull Run, Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction; Breakout, Finalist for the National Book Award in 2003; Saturnalia, Boston Globe-Horn Book Fiction Honor. He has also garnered numerous awards and recognitions from the American Library Association, School Library Journal, Publisher's Weekly, Booklist, and NCTE.
