The comical tragedy of the life and loves of Count István Pongrácz, an eccentric Hungarian nobleman. He lived in 19th century Hungary, conducting his life as if he lived as medieval aristocrat. He was widely regarded as insane because of his eccentricity. His refusal to accept the modern world caused conflict with some and admiration and love from his followers.His life changes dramatically when a beautiful young orphan girl comes into his life. A Beszterce ostroma (1895) Mikszáth egyik legolvasottabb regénye. Nem véletlenül. A groteszk elemeket is hordozó mű, középpontjában egy negatív, mai szóhasználattal élve deviáns hőssel az író időszerűségének ékes bizonyítéka. Nedec várának ura, Pongrácz gróf egy magyar Don Quijote. A 19. században élve hadat üzen saját századának. Középkorias gesztusaival és tetteivel a nevetségességen túl az olvasó együttérzését s szeretetét is kivívja. Ez nem az "őrülteknek" kijáró elnéző szeretet, hanem a nagy álmok képviselője iránti rokonszenv. Pongrácz gróf elmeállapota a 19. század mércéjével mérve orvosi eset. De így is környezete és kora fölé magasodik nemegyszer. (Bookline)
