I just love this series. Anytime grownups, especially older grownups without children around, are the main characters in a book for children, I get a silly grin on my face. I also think it's good for kids to see that life for others exists without them.
This is cute. It's more about a birthday party, the wish part is trivial. What do you say about little kids' books? Unless somebody fucks up and puts in something reprehensible (happens more often than you'd think) or is a creative genius with a beautiful soul (Maurice Sendak, Dr. Seuss at his best), they're all kind of nice and whatever.
Beginning/ Early Reader
Mr. Putter and his cat Tabby have invited Mrs. Teaberry and her dog Zeke over to celebrate Mr. Putter's birthday. Mrs. Teaberry continually calls Mr. Putter asking him to wait for her while she completes chores around her house. He begins to wonder if she will ever get there. Finally, Mrs. Teaberry and Zeke arrive with a cake, presents, and balloons. Mr. Putter has a wonderful birthday and feels like it was worth the wait!
“Mr. Putter & Tabby Make a Wish” written by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Arthur Howard is a nice beginning reader story that is easy to follow. Chapter headings help children understand the organization of the story. It is easy to comprehend because it has a clear beginning, middle, and show more end. I think the connection with animals and birthday parties will appeal to most children at this level. show less

Mr. Putty wants to celebrate his birthday, but his neighbor takes all day to come celebrate with him. His patience almost reaches a breaking point, but he realizes that his friend was stalling to make him a cake and get him a gift.
This book can be fun in the classroom. Letting children know that nobody is too old to enjoy their birthday even if they say they are. Mr. Putter is suprized with a cake for his birthday and he really enjoys it.
