Canonical title
Read Chinese: a Beginning Text in the Chinese Character. Book One
Original publication date
1947
First words
Forward -- Approach -- This beginner's text in Chinese characters is based on the assumption that the student has already acquired some knowledge of spoken Mandarin.
Quotations
Read Chinese was planned for the program of the Institute of Far Eastern Languages at Yale University, where the beginner starts with M. G. Tewksbury's Speak Chinese, a romanized text. It is assumed that the student has cover... (show all)ed the first twelve lessons of Speak Chinese before he starts Read Chinese. This means that the student has a certain familiarity with sentence structure and a modest speaking vocabulary before he is introduced to the ideographs. It is therefore possible to use an approach resembling the picture rebuses in children's magazines or the Japanese custom of intermixing Chinese characters with sound symbols.
