Description

The Seventh Gate is the thrilling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. In this tale of treachery, power, and heroism, Alfred, Haplo, and Marit embark on a journey of death and discovery as they seek to enter the dreaded Seventh Gate. I liked the theme this series attempts to explore (control, lack thereof) but it doesn't stick the landing for me.
In despair they find the strength to act.

Light shines on the Labyrinth. Some see it as a good sign, but others know the truth. A battle rages for the Final Gate, and if it closes everyone will be trapped in the Labyrinth. But Marit has other battles to fight. She must find Alfred, and together they must save Haplo. Lord Xar has taken Haplo to Abbarrach, to die. Then Lord Xar will bring him back, a soulless shell, ready to obey any command, even to lead Lord Xar to the Seventh Gate.

In many ways the story feels familiar. Scenes echo those from other books, highlighting the one thing that has changed, the characters. Flashbacks bring characters’ inner conflicts to the forefront. Each character is confronted with their own culpability. show more Some characters feel hurried, some plot points feel too convenient, but when the dust settles the ending feels both fitting and earned, providing fresh perspectives on familiar themes. Fans of the series will be pleased, while critics will find few reasons to change their mind.

I somewhat confusing, fast-paced, action-packed conclusion (with plot holes) to the adventures of Haplo, Alfred and Dog. The Seventh Gate is the final book in the series and won't make much sense unless you have read the previous 6 books.

The DeathGate Cycle has numerous issues with plot, continuity and erratic characterisation, but the world building is original and some of the characters are wonderfully written. This series is fun to read provided you don't think about things too much.
In the conclusion of the Death Gate Cycle we happen to know who/what's Dog and who/what's that old befuddled wizard... A little bit too linear for my taste but still a great ending of a fantastic series. Until this, I thought the DragonLance Chronicles & Legends the best of Weis & Hickman, but I changed my mind.... :-)
Pre09:

So I actually read this one first. Stupid me. Still was a good read with fast paced action and epic feel. Read it again years later in the right order. Was even better with the back story to pull on.

Characters: Actually get a female!! Woohoo! Haplo Alfred and the X-dude are all great.
Plot: Holy cow that's a roller coaster.
Style: Starts epic and maintains the feel for the whole book.
Het laatste boek is ook uit. Jammer.
I am sad to finish the series. There is a nice wrap up in the appendix that makes that part a must read.

It may be time to re-read some other favourites by these two authors.
