“As the dusk begins to darken the sea” are the opening words of this book published by Maurice Griffiths in 1979, and the author mentions that it is ‘some forty seven years’ since his first cruising book was launched. The sheer skill those years lent to his writings shows, this book grips the reader from those stirring first words that set the scene for the following yarns. The book is, once again, delicately and evocatively illustrated by Griffith himself, his skilled draftsmanship from his yacht designing evident.

For readers new either to the genre or author, Maurice (MG to his friends and loyal fans) became the editor of the English Yachting Monthly, a role he continued until retirement. He wrote eight books on yachting and show more told his ‘yarns ‘of his extensive cruising in the fabled Kent and Essex Swatchways and creeks, in a direct and eminently readable way.

If you have even just a trace of ‘salt in your veins; this is a book you will enjoy and want to own.
