Una grandissima scrittrice che si firmava con il nome maschile di James Tiptree jr (ma il suo vero nome, che rimase per lungo tempo incognito, era Alice Sheldon).
Qui, una storia d'amore alieno cantata quasi fosse un poema: Amore e Morte, Eros e Thanatos ; un amore totalmente differente dal nostro, una sessualità più vicina a quella di qualche insetto, ma differente da qualsiasi conosciuta.
Nella quale predominano una pulsione di sopravvivenza esasperata, in quanto le condizioni climatiche sono estreme, ed in peggioramento, e un'aggressività cannibalica essenziale, necessaria, alla continuazione della specie. Vinse il Premio Nebula.
