Sebastian’s Roller Skates is an enjoyable book that reminds children and adults to worry less and find the fun parts of life and capitalize on them. The vivid details and writing style in this book provides a heartwarming, carefree story about being outgoing and saying what one wants to say.
The story of Sebastian begins with a shy young boy that finds roller skates, practices, learns to worry less and have fun, and ultimately become more outgoing because of this newly found airy demeanor. The plot and details provide an effective and enthralling outline of Sebastian’s transformation. The practice on the roller skates are pivotal scenes that illustrate his growth. The exposition involving his shy glances and the listing of what he show more wanted to say but couldn’t gave a character outline of Sebastian. The climactic portion as he learns to roller skate and asks his friend to roller skate with him also highlights his growth and the resolution that results in him becoming more easygoing. Sebastian’s Roller Skates is a relaxed book that provides fun insight into a more carefree outlook on life. show less
This picture book from Spain features Sebastian, a boy so shy that he can barely whisper a word to his apartment-house neighbors, his barber, or even his teacher. Inside his head, though, he has plenty to say. Finding a pair of roller skates abandoned in the park, he tries skating but goes so slowly that he stumbles from one place to the next. When he catches hold of a runaway dog's leash and takes a wild ride though the park, Sebastian is spurred to overcome his hesitancy in skating and, even better, in speaking to those around him. His happiness shines from his face and from the collage of images that represent his words and thoughts. First in shades of gray and later in brilliant colors, the collage elements imaginatively express show more what Sebastian is feeling as well as what he is saying. The universality of Sebastian's experience ensures that this pleasing picture book, translated from the original Catalan, will resonate with children on this side of the Atlantic. show less
This book tells that a little boy did not talk too much because of shy, even if he had so much to say. One day, when he found a pair of slates and started skating, he felt a sense of bravery and was able to break away from his shyness and say all the things he wants to say but never said before. The theme of this book is very good for children to read, thus I'd like to use this book in my teaching. This book is good for 2-4 grade students to read.
This story is about a young shy boy named Sebastian. One day Sebastian is in the park and he finds a pair of roller skates. He decides to try them on and start skating. At first he is not very good. He then starts to practice every day he can. Eventually Sebastian becomes really good at roller skating. Sebastian then uses his new found roller skating talent to gain confidence in himself, especially when he is talking to people. Roller skating has shown him that it is important to speak and that his voice does matter. I liked this story and how the roller skates symbolize something so much bigger. I think it is amazing that in this story a pari of old skates and gaining the ability to skate helps a young boy gain so much confidence that show more he begins to communicate differently. I also liked how at the end Sebastian used his new found confidence and abilities to help someone who was a lot like him at one time. show less
I liked this book because I believe students who are shy may be able to connect to the book and it will inspire them to become more outgoing by getting them involved in new activities. This book incorporates a well-developed character of a boy named Sebastian, who is very shy. Throughout the book Sebastian has a lot to say, but he is scared to say it. As Sebastian finds a new hobby one day in the park, he spots roller skates sitting on the bench he decides he is going to learn to skate. In addition, the book uses illustrations to enhance the mood and emotions of the book. For example, in the book the illustrations show how Sebastian would lower his head and shrug his shoulders when people would talk to him, but by the end of the book show more they displayed that Sebastian was excited to talk to people about his new roller skates and all the other things he had to say. The main message of this story is to teach children that new activities can encourage and motivate you to be confident when speaking and communicating to others. Also, this book shows that hard work, and determination can pay off and enhance your skills in many different areas of your life. show less
I liked this book because I think it can be relatable to many young readers. This book is about a boy Sebastian who is very shy, but once he starts to develop a love for roller skating he started to talk to everyone. The language in this book is descriptive and clear. The writing is engaging and flows well with the pictures on each page. Sebastian is a very believable character. He is very shy and I believe many young children can be shy and may not like talking to people. This book is written in third person. The plot is organized in a steady pace. It was nice to see how Sebastian grows as a character. The roller skates gave him confidence to do anything. I think the illustrations enhance the story and engages young readers. This book show more pushes readers to think about how to be confident and not be afraid to speak what is on your mind. show less
I really liked this book for two main reasons. I really liked the plot of this story. This book is about a little boy who tries to roller skate and continues to fail, until one day he unexpectedly skates. I thought that the book was organized well, and it made me want to keep reading to see what would happen. In the beginning of the book he never really talked and I would wonder why. But as the book goes on more happens and he becomes more confident in himself. I also liked this book because of the characters. Sebastian was portrayed as a boy that was very believable. I think this is important because students reading this book can probably relate to him. This will let the students be more comfortable and excited when reading the book. show more Also, it will let the students feel like they are not alone. Many students go through obstacles that they have trouble overcoming, just like Sebastian did. The message of this story is to never give up. There were many times when Sebastian could have stopped skating, but he never gave up and eventually reached his goal. This is important for students to see so that they can have the motivation to reach their goal. show less
