This is an amusing story about a cockroach, Maybelle, and flea, Henry, who live in the house of a fastidious couple, Mr. and Mrs. Peabody. (Mr. Peabody looks remarkably like Oliver Hardy.) Maybelle is no longer satisfied eating crumbs off the floor, and so sets out to taste some food from a plate, which puts into motion a series of humorous events that include the Peabodys trying to rid their house of bugs, and Maybelle and Henry narrowly escaping.
I will be interested to see what the kids think of this one. I suspect that the kids in second grade and younger will enjoy the humor. It also seems likely that we will see more stories about Maybelle and Henry in the future.

Maybelle is quite the unexpected endearing character, a chubby cockroach who loves herself some gourmet dishes. She knows that she should resist, for safety and just because, but Maybelle cannot resist the temptation to find her way onto the table when she learns that a Very Important Guest will be coming to dinner. All manner of chaos ensues when the diners realize they have an additional, most unwelcome guest. The lively and comedic illustrations bring the hijinx and pratfalls to life, evoking gigles in the most serious of readers. This delightful short chapter book will delight readers of all ages.
Maybelle in the Soup was an absolutely hilarious chapter book i ever read, and the story behind this book is even funnier. The Author shares the story at the end of the book which is when she was younger she grew up in New Orleans which had huge crawly cockroaches in there house a few times. I would totally read this book to my students if it was grade 2 or up. This book had me laughing and i would recommend it to any teacher to read, and get the student attention.
This story hysterically accounts for a cockroach’s whereabouts in the nice, clean home of Mr. and Mrs. Peabody. Maybelle is an adorable, well intentioned cock roach that just wants to eat food off of a plate instead off the floor. She befriends the only other bug in the home, a flea that lives on the cat, and she accidentally ruins a dinner party. This book is action packed as Maybelle is always on the run. What is great about this book is that her countless adventures makes it seem like everywhere the Peabodys go is infested with roaches, when it’s really poor Maybelle just trying to make way for herself. Very cute 2009-2010 Bluebonnet Book.

This was a wonderfully entertaining book. Although it is an early chapter book I read it to my six year old and he loved it. He loved to imagine the little world the characters lived on. We read one chapter every night and were on the edge of our seats! This would be a great read aloud for young children or a great read for early readers, great characters!
for book club with my 7 year old! too cute~ such a great book for a little girl book club!
