This book is about a child who wants to "go visiting" and picks up several animals along the way. In my opinion, this is a very informative piece of contemporary realistic fiction, in more than one way. I enjoyed this book. The plot was organized and flowed at a steady pace. As you turn each page and head to the next one, you are introduced to a new animal that is going visiting with the child. This book is organized and flows steadily because as the child and animals continue to go visiting, along the way, they are picking up new animals, in greater quantity. For example, the first page shows a child and a dog that start to go visiting, and on the next page, they meet "one brown foal ready to play." This pattern continues until they show more encounter "six yellow puppies ready to play," at the end of the story. I found the language in the book to be very easy to follow because it is progressive and the rhyming makes it a quick, easy read for a child. After each time the child and animals collect a few new animals, every other page says, "Let's go visiting. What do you say?" The illustrations on each page also show exactly what the words are saying so it would be easier for a child who may be an English Language Learner to follow along because he/she could look at the illustrations to see what is happening. For example, one page says, "Three black kittens are ready to play." The page has an illustration of three black kittens that begin to play with the two red calves and the dog who already started on the adventure. Also, the illustrations are very simple so there is not too much going on, on one page, making the text and illustrations easier to follow and understand. I love how the book incorporates progressive counting, using colors to describe the animals, and rhyme, all to make the book that much more educational.
The big idea/message of the book is to get children to learn how to count, recognize different colors, and observe new animals while going on a visiting adventure, all together. All of the animals, as well as the child "go visiting," to no specific place, but the story takes children on a farmyard adventure with all of the different animals, and the reader can use his/her imagination to think of a place where the child and animals may be heading. show less

Contemporary realistic fiction: This book is about a child who has a dog and decides to go visiting other animals. The child and dog end up visiting a brown foul, 2 red calves, 3 black kittens, 4 piglets, 5 ducklings, six yellow puppies. Eventually the child and dog get tired from visiting new animals so all the child and the animals fall asleep in the hay.
I thought this story reminded me of a song because it was repetitive. Every time the child and dog visited a new animal the song had to start over and say in order who they visited and then the story would tell you who they were going to visit next. I thought the story was cute because this is a situation that could possible happen.
I think this book can teach a child to count and show more learn colors because the book repeats itself over and over so the child will learn different colors and how many of each animal. This book does help chldren learn new words as well as helping children improve their memory. show less

Summary:
A child goes to visit all different kinds of animals. All of the animals are younger, so children can relate. This story teaches different colors and also goes through the numbers 1-6, which is great for younger kids.
Personal Reaction:
The pictures in this book are colorful and well done, but I think they are also kind of strange. The story involves animals so children will most likely enjoy it based on that. I like that it teaches children at the same time, so they don't necessarily know they are learning while just enjoying a book.
Classroom Extensions:
A teacher can write on the board what the students favorite animals are to compare to each other. Another idea is that the students can go around the classroom and point out show more things that represent the numbers discussed. show less

Let's go visiting and see who's ready to play--one foal, two calves, three kittens, four piglets, five ducklings, and six puppies! And once we've stomped in the mud with the piglets and swum in the lake with the ducklings, let's curl up with this adorable menagerie and take an afternoon nap.
This book is about a little boy that wants to go visit all the baby animals on the farm. It is also a counting book.
I like this book because it is very well illustrated. It has a rhythm to it and I think Pre K and Kindergarten students would enjoy it as well.
I would use this book for a Math and/or Science lesson. It would also be great to use to talk about what the baby animals are called such as calf, kitten, puppy, etc.

This was a counting book. A little boy counted farm animals up to six. They were foul, calves, piglets, ducklings, kittens, and puppies. I also noticed the animals were described by different colors. All the animals played together, and then they took a nap in the hay. The pictures were very colorful and busy.
I love animals. I had three of the six animals in this book. We had a kitten, puppies, and two ducks. At the end of the book, they cuddled and fell asleep in the hay and I love sleeping. The last picture reminded me of my puppy Millie and me on a lazy day.
This would be a good unit to get to know the different animals and sounds they make. The students can draw a picture of their favorite memory with their pet. Then they can write show more about it. I think it would be neat to have a show and tell and let them bring their pets. show less

24 months - we are a bit beyond this book at this point but it is a cute counting book of animals. Would be a good signing book for numbers and animals as well. Of course there are many books that do similar so I wouldn't say this one really stands out.
