Monkey Puzzle

Another hit from Julia Donaldson.....The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom are favorites in our household......Where's My Mom didn't disappoint. The little monkey's adorable, the butterfly's human looking face and short memory issues are comical, the story encourages attention to detail and teaches animal recognition....it's perfection.

The baby monkey's exasperation at the butterfly's utter failure to identify mama monkey is pretty funny. (Plus, can the butterfly really not remember instructions from one animal to the next?) And it's brightly illustrated. But otherwise this one just didn't do it for me. ... update a few days later: But, while it didn't do much for me, it made an impression on my 21mo, who referenced the book several times in the next few days.

In the story, “Where’s My Mom?” a monkey has separated from its mother, and reaches out to a butterfly for help. This character, the butterfly, exemplifies the words persistent and tenacious. The butterfly leads the monkey to all different animals and all different places within the forest. The butterfly refuses to give up after many failed attempts to find the monkey’s mother. Finally, the butterfly uses the clues that the monkey gave him to find the monkey’s father and is able to reunite the family.

A lovely story that raises the issue of metamorphosis and teaches children about the ways we can describe animals.
