Spellbound

The first 2-3 books in this series are addictive, a fresh "modern-teen" POV in the tired genre of witches/kids with supernatural powers finding themselves (and the wonder of Wicca) among families/communities who "don't get it".

After #3, it goes downhill. There is no psychological development of the main characters (and the secondary characters are quite shallowly described and hard to distinguish throughout the series; even the more promising and believable ones, BFFs Bree & Robbie are essentially dropped from the books by #4) a lot of the narrative suspenseful points are all "tell" and no "show", the conclusions are hurried and tied up nicely--except for a minimum of predictable suspense that the publisher made you have to draw people show more through the series. Also, each book is so short, (it's like a single chapter of a Harry Potter) that the narrative arc is predictable and hasty, and makes one wonder if these were paid by the book, or that the series was extended way beyond what should have been its natural life span by the publisher, or what.

It's no Harry Potter, that's for sure. Apart from the above flaws, here's no humor (unless you count Morgan's drinking Diet Coke all the time, which gets tired really fast) and no writing good enough to be enjoyed by adults as well (a sure sign of a good children's book).

Also there's way too much touchy-feely Wicca rituals and pseudo Gaelic chanting, which is not well enough written to be convincing and also gets tiresome. show less

Morgan is just as confused as ever, maybe even more so now than before. She feels drawn to Hunter, even if they still clash together. There's just something about him that entices Morgan. But she still feels for Cal, her ex-boyfriend and would be killer.

When it appears as if someone is out to get Hunter, Morgan can't help thinking it's Cal or Selene, even if it's mundane accidents without the help of magic. The need to be able to protect herself as well as others becomes obvious. With the little help of magic, Morgan would be able to gain knowledge from an older, more knowledgeable witch in a sort amount of time- a terrifying and enticing thought.

What Morgan wanted and didn't want more than anything was a confrontation with Cal, but show more she knew that it was inevitable. She no longer trusts Cal and with that knowledge, she is able to break free from the heartache that thinking of him caused and move on to a new love- Hunter.

What Morgan hadn't been counting on was Selene returning so soon, and for her to kidnap Morgan's little sister, Mary K. There was no way that Morgan could just sit back, she had to save her sister from Selene. With her birthmother's tools and Hunter at her side, Morgan set out to find Selene and save Mary K- even if in the end it would kill her.

Spellbound is a promising novel in the sweep series. It's a intriguing addition to the world of Morgan Rowlands. New love blossoms slowly and clumsily, just as old, bitter love reappears. Choices and sacrifices are made, even if some are small and tedious. Morgan can no longer sit on the sidelines in the world of magic- her magic is just too powerful. The hardships that go on through the novel are tantalizing as they are sad. As the characters plow through life with magic, they must tread forward carefully, or they just might prick their finger on the thorn of the rose. I find it almost impossible to put down the book- too eager to read more and discover what will happen next. show less

Morgan is still struggling to control her powers and understand her betrayal by Cal. She is learning more about wicca, the good and the bad. Hunter is preparing her for a battle they both know is coming. Will she be ready?

These books are just so much fun. I feel like I know these kids. So far Tiernan has been very true to her world and is keeping it believable. Best lunch books ever!

I really enjoy this series. I thought this book waas particularly good because it focused a lot on developing the backgrounds of secondary characters. You learn about Morgan's parents, and the ending makes you want to read the next book.

Another great book in this series. I really have been enjoying them. They are short but just filled with quality stuff lol. I feel that this book really marks a huge change in Morgan's life. It started two books back. But this is the one where I feel things happened that will make the story from here on out different from what has been happening so far. Guess I'll find out.

I liked this whole series a lot, the whole wiccan thing wasn't as much of a hype so I really treasured these books.
I looked up to the main character and I wanted to be so much like her :)
Overall a really nice read back in the day, now it would be just one of the many out there.

I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT! Carl may have been a scumbag, but I knew his feelings were true. WOW what a great book. I cannot wait to read the next one. Great series.
