Description

Simon Templar never goes anywhere with the intention of getting into trouble, but trouble seems to like following him. In seven adventures round Europe, he discovers dead bodies, missing jewels, kidnappers and swindlers galore. He was meant to be on holiday - but when push comes to shove, he'll make sure that justice is done. 'The character of Simon Templar forms the perfect literary bridge between John Buchan's Richard Hannay and Ian Fleming's James Bond.' Mike Ripley

Much more fun than I expected! It's a collection of short stories that take place in various European cities. The Saint is known as a trouble-maker in each even before he arrives, so the police are always watching him, and yet he manages to help people with his sneaky methods even while under surveillance. He recovers jewels, uncovers blackmailers, even faces the Mafia. But my favorite story is the one in Switzlerland which plays like The Taming of the Shrew. He takes an entitled and obnoxious young women on a week-long hike that teachers her to enjoy nature. Yes, it's old-fashioned, and I loved it the more for that.

Dedication
To my father with love
First words
"I hope, Monsieur Templar," said Inspector Archimède Quercy, of the Paris Police Judiciaire, in passable English, that you will not think this meeting is unfriendly." ("Paris: The covetous headsman")
The Hollandia is one of the best hotels in Amsterdam. ("Amsterdam: The Angel's Eye")
Simon Templar always thought of her as the Rhine Maiden for the simple reason that he met her on his way down the Rhine. ("The Rhine: The Rhine maiden")
Probably if Belinda Deane hadn't been born with such liquid brown eyes, such a small straight nose, such a delightful chin, she would never have been spoiled. ("Tirol: The golden journey")
The lights of Lucerne were twinkling on the lake as Simon Templar strolled out towards it through the Casino gardens, and above them the craggy head of old Pilatus loomed blackly against a sky full of stars. ("Lucerne: The lo... (show all)aded tourist")
"People," said Myra Campion languidly, "ought to have to pass an examination and get licensed before they're allowed to exhibit themselves on a bathing beach." ("Juan-Les-Pins: The Spanish cow")
The city of Rome, according to legend, is built upon the spot where the twin sons of Mars, Romulus and Remus (by a Vestal who must have been somewhat less than virgin) were suckled by a maternally-minded she-wolf; and there w... (show all)ere bitter men in the police departments of many countries who would have said that that made it a very appropriate city for Simon Templar to gravitate into, even today. ("Rome: The Latin touch")
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)He caught the girl's eye, but she said nothing, and he knew that her sense of humor was coming back. ("Paris: The covetous headsman")
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)On second thought, after he saw Mr. Upwater's next expression, he wondered if that was quite the right thing to mention. ("Amsterdam: The Angel's Eye")
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)Being human, he was aware that the girl's eyes were fixed on him with an odd breathlessness; and he thought that she could carry with her many worse ideals. ("The Rhine: The Rhine maiden")
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)"I can never go back!" ("Tirol: The golden journey")
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)He still had eight diamonds, six emeralds, and ten valuable stamps in his pockets, which no one was left to ask embarrassing questions about, and at such a time it would have been very foolish to draw any more attention to himself. ("Lucerne: The loaded tourist")
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)And in a little while he went quietly away, as he had come, and walked home empty-handed under the stars. ("Juan-Les-Pins: The Spanish cow")
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)"I'm liable to need it one of these days," said the Saint. ("Rome: The Latin touch")
