Nobody's Baby But Mine

Jane Darlington is a genius and it has ruined her life. Desperate for a child with average intelligence, Jane is convinced that Cal Bonner, the Chicago Stars' seemingly slow-witted quarterback, is the perfect candidate to father her baby. Unfortunately for Jane, Cal is no slouch in the brains department, and he has no intention of allowing her to run roughshod over him.

Jane tricks Cal into impregnating her and has no intention of telling him of his impending fatherhood. Not only does she treat him as if he were the village idiot, but her behavior could even be considered sexual assault. Only in a romance novel would a man even consider forgiving a woman who treated him this way.
Cal show more himself is no angel either. While his fury at Jane is quite justifiable, his caveman tactics do not present him in a good light.
Despite these issues, Cal and Jane have fantastic chemistry and their dialogue is witty, funny, and charming. The secondary characters are well developed and Cal's grandmother is a scream. There is also a subplot involving Cal's parents that has its lovely moments although his father also needs a good kick in the behind.
Overall, an entertaining read although many readers may be put off by Jane's reprehensible actions at the beginning of the book - I certainly was. show less

I will never look at a box of Lucky Charms the same way again! This book is hilarity and emotion at their optimum. Jane Darlington wants a baby... a NORMAL baby. Because she's a genius and lived through a childhood of being called FREAK, she thinks that the way to get a normal baby is to breed with a stupid man. But she doesn't find out until too late that the stupid man she chose is nearly as smart as she is. A marriage of convenience is anything but in this wonderfully, character-driven story. Pick it up, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips will become one of your must read authors forever
Loved this book, except for the reproductive coercion.
Jane wants a baby, tricks Calvin into having sex with her and then they get married. I liked the supporting cast and the family stuff, it was all very interesting and moving. And married first and falling in love after is one of my favorite tropes. But REALLY don't like tricking someone into having a baby.

The third time really was a charm for me with Susan Elizbeth's books!
This book was my third read from SEP. I have to admit that I'm in love with her love stories, and I don't even like these cheesy and classic romance-related books at all!
My conclusion is that Susan really knows how to work her magic with her readers. I'm finally under her spell, and I like it. :)))))
A typical rom-com that includes a little bit of sugar, spice, and everything nice; Jane Darlington is really fed up from lousy relationships, which seem that are only wasting both her patience and her precious time. The clock is ticking, the pressure is real, and - boom! There she has it - her perfect and simple plan to spice things up, that really looks like the craziest show more (and yet, maybe the best) thing that will ever happen to her.
I have a feeling that the books in the series are getting better and better. I can't wait to start reading 'Dream a Little Dream'!

Jane Darlington is a physics professor. She's single-mindedly focused on her work but when her ex-boyfriend dumped her and announced that he was having a baby with the new girlfriend, the tears kicked her biological clock into high. But Jane has a problem. She is a certifiable genius and she doesn't want her child to have the unhappy, freakish childhood she had so she purposely sets out to have her baby fathered by someone who is dumb as a post. (Obviously understanding genetics and the role it plays in intelligence is not her strong point though.)
Her next door neighbor's ditzy daughter decides to set her up with the quarterback of the local pro team and Jane, seeing him play the rube on tv, agrees. She is to be Cal Bonner's birthday show more present from his teammates who think that releasing sexual tension might make ole Cal less of a bear to work with on the field. Somehow, despite Cal's aversion for prostitutes, he is willing to have at it with the vamped-up, anonymous, supposed high class call girl Jane. But she doesn't get pregnant. And so all on her own initiative, she accosts him for a repeat performance the following month, at which time she does fall pregnant. Now he's never supposed to know about the baby but finds out, leading him to strong arm her into an unpleasant marriage of convenience, at least until the baby is born. Even worse, they go back to his tiny home town and Jane has to deal with his family, including his wacky, backwoods grandmother, all while maintaining a frigid relationship with a man she's coming to love.
There is much sexual tension, some laughable scenes, and the requisite misunderstandings in this contemporary romance. Cal is not nearly as stupid as Jane had hoped and she is not nearly as savvy as he assumed. There are mini plots galore amongst Cal's family as well. This is a generally likable book that doesn't require deep reading. It will be a hit with most romance fans. show less

SEP makes me laugh. She makes me cry. She makes me do both at once! Wonderful romance, great characters. Perfect for each other, though of course they don't know it. This may be my favorite of hers.
NOTICE: *I “started” getting into reading this book early afternoon Sunday. The next thing I knew, the birds were chirping Monday morning and I had read thru the night. Did I love it? ABSOLUTELY. Not what I expected.
SENSUALITY RATING: YES Profanity; YES sexual encounters – “His arousal”, “straddled his thigh”. Such a completely great story that the sex did not detract from the plot and was tasteful (if not I would have quickly flipped through those pages as I prefer sexual encounters to be practically null in any book that I read).

OVERALL RATING: (5) stars because unexpected events from beginning to end and all the way around. Very well written. Pulls the reader into the story. Loved ALL the major characters which is unusual for any book. First time reading this author's work and look forward to more. show less

3.5 out of 5 stars. I love this series! And by reading the description at first I wasn't sure I would like it. However, I was happily mistaken! "Nobody's Baby But Mine" was sweet, funny, fast paced, and just a plan ol' great read!! It definitely lived up to the mark of all of the other books in this series I've read!

Susan Elizabeth Phillips received a B.F.A. in theater arts from Ohio University and became a teacher after graduation. She taught high school drama, speech, and English before deciding to become a stay-at-home mom. She wrote her first novel, The Copeland Bride, with a friend under the pen name of Justine Cole, but soon started a solo career. Her show more other works include Glitter Baby, It Had to Be You, Heaven, Texas, Kiss an Angel, Dream a Little Dream, and The Great Escape.
