Girls' Night Out

A collection of short stories by famous chicklit writers. These were very hit-or-miss with me. There were only a very few that I actually enjoyed. I'm a sucker for happy endings, and most of these failed to deliver. I think that's what upset me most. In a book called "Girls' Night Out" I expected tales of dating woes, of embarrassing wardrobe disasters, of urban adventures. What I got consisted mostly of infidelity, heartbreak, or morals when I had hoped for bubbly and fun.

A collection of chick-lit stories that was both entertaining and banal. Some of the stories were boring, and some of the "protagonists" were REALLY hard to root for. Sometimes, it made me ask: Is this what the new "modern woman" is? Selfish, catty, constantly drunk, worried more about having Manolos and men than morals.

However, there are some stories that are touching, beautiful, with people you truly hope will find happiness. Some are funny, some just cute. And sometimes, just sometimes, the "bad girls" get exactly what they deserve.

Truthfully, I bought the book because it had Meg Cabot, Marian Keyes, and the women who wrote The Nanny Diaries as authors. Oddly enough, I disliked their short stories the most. Go fig, huh?

All in all, show more an entertaining, but mostly forgettable read. (Case in point: I read the thing in two days, finished yesterday, and remember the plots to only a few of the stories.) May be worth a reread in the hammock with a cup of iced tea. Maybe I'll remember more then -- that's why this is an "impersonal" review, rather than a personal one.

The stories were good, but it seemed like quite a few of them had unhappy endings. Not that every story should have a happy ending, but this wasn't nearly as much "fun" as [book: Girls' Night In] was, and I guess I was expecting more of the same. Overall, though, I liked the writing of most of the stories and there were at least a couple where even though they didn't have happy endings, I rather enjoyed and appreciated the morals of the stories.

Chicklit authors (like Meg Cabot) submit stories for charity. As with most collections, some stories were good and others sucked. I do enjoy the genre of short stories though; it is perfect if you don't have a lot of time to read. I was finishing up the school year and preparing to move when I was reading this so it was a great book for that time.

Quick easy reads. A bunch of short stories written by different authors but all in chick-lit fashion. Entertaining and sometimes funny.
