An artist compares teaching painting to children and elephants, and the elephants are often better painters than the children. I found this book by accident and it made me want to cry. An unexpected look at the joy of artistic expression that I usually attribute to human beings. It's nice to know that I still have a lot to learn.
I love this book. The author starts out the book by saying, "I teach in two schools. One is in the city. The other in the jungle. Some of my students have hands. The others have trunks." This book goes on to show the similarities and differences between children and elephants. It shows that even though they are so different we can find similarites in everyone and everything. This book is fun to read to all ages. It can be used during a study on Elephants or Asia. It can also be used to address differences among students. And how everyone has unique talents and abilities no matter how different they are. I actually have a painting done by an elephant from a local zoo which would be great to show along with the book.
Author Katya Arnold established a painting school for elephants to raise money to support them. The books is an effort on her part to show us the humane side of these gentle giants. It starts with on interesting opening remark "I teach in two schools. One is in the city and the other is in the jungle." Throughout the narrative, elephant activities are compared to human activities. For Example during school, just like human children, elephants also throw tantrums, or whisper to each other. The pictures support the text. They are large and cover most of the page. One of my favorite is the painting of a flower by an elephant. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the painting.

A fun and informative book that can be read to children as show more young as 4-7. show less
Elephants are my favorite animal, so of course I was delighted to discover this book! It's very interesting, and I learned quite a few new elephant facts of which I was unaware. Also, I learned about the AEACP, which is an organization that helps conserve and support Asian elephants by selling their artwork.
I loved the innocent fun of this book. I thought it was great how the author compared elephants to children and how it is hard to control either one. The artwork created by the elephants was quite amazing.
This was one of my favorite books this term. The amazing ways the elephants can create paintings by using their talent and their trunks is amazing. To think that such large creatures can be taught to use their skills to paint was a fun thing to watch. The pictures in the book told the story in a creative and impressive way, and I found myself rereading this book.
This book shows that people are like animals (specifically animals, too). A teacher successfully teaches elephants to paint. I think this book is good to use to show children that people and animals aren't all that different. The pictures of elephants make the story more real and can help kids gain a better understanding.
