Old Melbourne town before the gold rush

by Michael Cannon

On This Page

Description

More a collection of short essays on specific themes than a narrative history of Melbourne in the 1840s. Cannon draws freely on his extensive knowledge of the archives of the Victorian Public Record Office and secondary sources to portray life in the settlement prior to the gold rushes. Unfortunately the level of documentation is shoddy (no footnotes are used), and it would be quite difficult to follow up most sources. Numerous illustrations, though thoughtfully selected, have been poorly show more reproduced. Nevertheless, the work contains a great deal of useful detail. show less
