Gossie is a happy and active gosling who wears her favorite red rubber boots every day, until the day she wakes up to discover that her boots are missing. Olivier Dunrea's brightly-colored illustrations depict an actively curious Gossie, who is always investigating different creatures and situations. The way in which the images float on the predominantly white pages draws the reader's focus inexorably to the gosling. And for a creature whose facial expression is limited to an opening and closing her beak, Dunrea endows his gosling with emotion through raised wings and jaunty steps. Gossie’s generous reaction to another gosling borrowing her boots serves as a good example to children that shared tastes can lead to good friends. While show more the board book version of this story may not be large enough for story time, the highly sympathetic Gossie would be a great tool for discussions about sharing. This book is recommended for both public and school libraries. show less
I loved this. Simple words and illustrations, a little bot of detail to talk about on each page, soothing repetition, and a hilarious ending.
We have read all the books in this series. They're very simple and formulaic, but in a good way - very cute, too.
Only problem? After the 100th rendition (especially if you're reading the other very similar books as well), you can recite that book in your sleep. And you will. Oh, how you will.

Meet Gossie, a small yellow gosling who loves to wear bright red boots--every day. One morning Gossie can't find her beloved boots. She looks everywhere for them: under the bed, over the wall, even in the barn. Preschoolers will enjoy helping Gossie find her red boots and delight in where Gossie finally finds them.
I liked this book for various reasons. First, it could be used for a phonics lesson in an early childhood classroom or with ELLs to establish initial and final consonant sounds. This is the first part of the phonics continuum for emerging readers and writers. The book emphasis the G sound such as, ""Great boots" said Gossie. Gertie smiled.". The other emphasized consonant sound is the R and B sound. The main repeated phrase in this book is "bright red boots", others include, "bed, barn, run, rain, back, ride". I also like how the sentences are short with an easily identifiable verb, subject and predicate; example " She looked everywhere. Under the bed. *new page* "over the wall" *page* in the barn". It even has a significant sight word show more vocab as well like- she, the, in, could, every- that are repeated often throughout the book. Each page has a very detailed and realistic illustration, while still being cartoon enough to keep the attention of kids. This would be a good book to use for the entire first part of the phonics continuum. In addition to the learning aspect, the book is enjoyable to read which attracts children's attention, especially the younger ones. It is fun to read because it is a silly story which is ultimately about friends sharing a pair of boots. show less
Gossie loves her red boots and wears them everywhere, until one morning when she discovers that they're missing. When she finds them on the feet of another smaller duck she decides to share them and the book ends with each of them wearing one red boot. Very young children will respond very well to this story as they are learning to share and will be able to relate to Gossie. The illustrations are very eye catching with simplistic watercolor and ink pictures that contrast in an amusing way with a stark white background.
