Real Women Have Curves. America Ferrera, Lupe Ontiveros, and George Lopez.
Themes: High school girl wants to go to college, poor girl wanting a better life. She takes chances and embraces life. Works in a dress factory.
Censorship Issues: There is one curse word towards the end of the movie. Other than that it is perfect for the classroom. It does not have any violence and has a great message.
Plot Summary: A poor Mexican girl, named Ana, gets herself into a rich high school. She exceeds in everything does. She becomes friends with her teacher and he believes she has the potential to go to college. He parents do not want her to go. They want her to stay home and help around the house in any way she can. Her mother does some psycho things show more to make her stay home. With her teacher aiding her in her advancements to college, she ends up going against her mothers wishes.
Critique: This movie is perfect for the classroom. It shows that Ana will stop at nothing to finally be successful. She knows in her heart that she can do anything. This sends out a great message to high school students. Middle school students could also get a good message from it. There is just one curse word that might not be good for middle school students. I really liked this movie. I was laughing and motivated at the same time. I would definitely recommend this movie.
Curriculum Uses: I think there is a use this film in a high school classroom. It shows motivation and that just because someone is poor does not mean they can not be successful. I do not see a problem with this movie being in a public library or a school library. It has a great message to offer plus some students could really relate to this movie. show less
