Two Shonen stereotypes broken down by Fairy Tail:

1. A strong female character
Girls in Shonen are typically weak, particularly at the beginning. Some girls grow strong as the story progresses. If there is a really strong female character, she will either be introduced half way through the series and/or she will be one of the bad guys. In Fairy Tail, Erza is the strongest and scariest woman of the guild and she is introduced as early as volume 2. She isn't just kickass, she is also morally sound and admirable.

2. Fan service catering to a variety of audience
I hate fan service. It is annoying and stops me from recommending a manga. Anyway, Shonen fan service usually features scantily clad beautiful girls. What is different about Fairy Tail is that it also features a handsome guy and some women who would not traditionally be called beautiful. ( )

With each page I can see how much effort and heart is put into this work. I myself am an artist and this just makes me want to read more and gives me courage and a boost of confidence of my own art. ( )

A cute continuation of the story left off in volume 1. This volume introduces new characters and builds on Natsu's character (moreso than Happy or Lucy's). ( )
