Description
The time of troubles had arrived. The chaos of spilled blood, lawlessness, monsters and avatars roaming Faerun had come. The Shadowmasters had seized the opportunity to increase their influence and power while Mystra and her minions were otherwise engaged. The Shadowmasters had woven a magical cloak of spells that would render the wearer invisible to their rival's magic.Tags

I didn't care for the 'Time of Troubles' concept in the Forgotten Realms world, but these books grew on me a bit. The idea of a conflict among the gods that has a big impact on the humans isn't really a strange concept in fantasy. Well written, maybe a bit too much hack and slash.
Elminster and his allies fight the Malaugrym, evil shapeshifters using a magical cloak to become invisible to magic while attempting to slay the Chosen of Mystra.
The Malaugrym, a race of evil shapeshifters, exploit the magical chaos of the Time of Troubles, when gods roam Faerûn, to launch an assault on Elminster and the Chosen. A Malaugrym wizard, Milhvar, creates a magical effect that makes the shapeshifters immune to the magical detection and attacks of Mystra’s Chosen.
As Elminster, Midnight, and their allies work to restore order to Faerûn, they battle these Shadowmasters, who have created a Shadow Throne to spread their control.
The heroes successfully combat the Malaugrym, destroying the Shadow Throne and killing many of the show more shapeshifters, including Milhvar. show less

less good than the first one. cartoonishly evil shape shifters were hard to picture and follow what was happening.
