Description
It is 1321, and Lady Elizabeth of Topsham, prioress of St. Mary's, is fighting to retain her position in the face of devastating opposition. She has been accused by Sister Margherita, St. Mary's treasurer, of giving much-needed funds to the new vicar, a man she often sees alone at night. Many of the nuns are convinced that Margherita would make a better prioress- especially now that it is certain that Moll, a young nun, was murdered in her sick bed. When a novice nun dies and the prioress is accused of her murder by the nunnery's treasurer in a letter to the suffragan bishop, he asks Keeper of the Peace Sir Baldwin Furnshill and Warden Simon Puttock to investigate discreetly. But why, when the nunnery does not fall in either of them's jurisdiction?

Medieval murder mystery set in a priory. The deaths of three nuns/ novices is investigated by local and church officials. Lot and lots of characters, but fortunately a list in the front of the book to help you keep track of all the major players. Enjoyable read, but the large number of people involved was hard to follow at times.
I have virtually all of Jecks' works. I am new to Library Things so am not going to go into great detail except to say that he has given me many hours of reading pleasure and largley give him 5 stars. Although it has been some years since I found one of the later stories, I was, at the time, prompted to find the first in the series, etc. It is grand that both his former publisher and his new publisher (Simon & Schuster UK) are republishing his books in print and other formats. I have given Jecks 5 star reviews over the years since I stumbled on to him. As to his research, historically it is from primary sources wherein he writes plausible tales into the historical setting.

Michael Jecks was born in Surrey, United Kingdom in 1960. He worked as a computer salesman for thirteen years before becoming a full-time author of medieval murder mysteries. His first book, The Last Templar, was published in 1994. Most of his books are either based on Dartmoor legends or on actual events recorded in Coroner's Rolls or the Crown show more Pleas of the Devon Eyre. He writes the Knights Templar series as well as The Medieval Murderers with Bernard Knight, Ian Morsen, Susannah Gregory, and Phillip Gooden.
