This is a simple story about crossing a stream with an extra dab of playfulness. The silent presence of the fox in the story adds dramatic tension that, because it’s interpreted from the pictures, is perfectly suited to each child’s level of comprehension. Tafuri’s illustrations are bold and simple with a primary color palette. They tell the main story while subtly hinting at the source of the “bad dream”. C‘s favorite part is the kindness shown by the ducks to the chickens in helping them cross the stream.
Simple read aloud, Gees help chickens cross the stream to escape a fox.
Across the stream. And then the fox wanted to eat them. And then the feathers fell off. And then them ride the ducklings! I liked when they found a way to cross the stream. The end.
