I have to agree with another reviewer, if I had to pick one word to describe this book it would be “lazy.” While it was a relatively quick read, and this lists at the end of each chapter of useful interventions were engaging, the book as a whole really needed a lot more work.
Each chapter focuses on a specific issue that children or adolescents in school might approach a counselor for help dealing with (I.e. depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, sexual activity, etc.). Each of these chapters, after a brief introduction, looks at 3-5 peer reviewed studies on how to address these issue in the context of a school. The problem is, each of these studies is literally summarized in about a page a half, barely longer than an show more abstract and certainly not enough to get a very good feel for the techniques used or the full implications of the study. Additionally, when specific treatment protocols were a part of the study, those manualized protocols are never described. This might as well be a book length annotated bibliography, as very little detail and no full text of studies. A better plan might be to focus on one looking at one or two studies per chapter and going into a lot more depth. show less
