Introduction [by Antonia Fraser]
No other king in our history has been honoured with the epithey of Great.
Among the many thousands of kings and emperors and other rulers of men in our Western civilisation, posterity and the common consent of mankind has been most sparing in conferring the splendid epithet 'the Great'.
Quotations
For the Anglo-Saxons, as for other Germanic peoples, law rested on custom, on agreed and immemorial usage, and a rule, when he acted as a law-giver, saw himself as setting out what the law was, not as creating it.
