Dixieland is an exuberant form of jazz, with a driving dance tempo and emphasis on a melody. It was first developed in the agglutinating petri dish of New Orleans at the turn of the last century from diverse cultures--the offspring of minstrelsy, blues, ragtime, and the French military march in the hands of west African funeral drummers. Jazz is the product of a melting pot.[6]
