A Week in Winter

Moorgate, the beloved house in this story, is practically a character on par with the people in the story. It all revolves around this house. When Maudie decides she must sell it, it starts a chain of events that will eventually reveal past secrets and sins. This character-driven story is mostly gentle in nature and set in beautiful Cornwall. As this well-written story unfolds, readers will be drawn into the lives of these characters as they reveal both the sadness and joys they have experienced.

The first time I read this, nearly seven years ago, I thought it a wonderful book. I rated it very highly, and recommended it enthusiastically.

So, in re-reading my Marcia Willett novels, I was particularly looking forward to re-reading this one.

And, indeed, it's a nice story. Maudie decides to sell Moorgate, the old family holiday home. She has arguments with her step-daughter, and happy weekends with her step-granddaughter. She adopts a dog, and wonders if the house will ever sell.

Rob, who has been renovating Moorgate, is keeping an eye on it. Something strange is evidently going on, too...

Meanwhile, Melissa knows she won't live long, having stopped all treatment for her terminal illness. She wants a week away on her own, in a show more place where nobody knows how ill she is. She sees Moorgate advertised, and decides to go and visit it.

Their stories inter-link, and there are some good character studies. I found the story sometimes moving, often gripping - having forgotten most of it since my first reading - and the ending was positive and hopeful. show less

I love her books! Eventually I will have read all of them. Her writing style is just completely appealing to me---her descriptions, her characters. She writes with warmth and depth and with always interesting interrelationships with her overlapping story lines.

A lovely British novel with wonderful characterizations, evocative scenery, and intriguingly intertwined storylines.

I loved this book!!!!! This book reminded me somewhat of Rosamund Pilcher's "Winter Solstice" but not quite as good. Marcia Willett weaves a wonderful tale of family strengths, weaknesses, falling in love with a few mysteries thrown in. I highly recommend this book, it was well worth the read.

a perfectly charming chick book that was great to listen to in the car for a long trip. loved the characters and enjoyed having them with me for the ride!

I liked the story, but it also put me in the mind of P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern. The book was one I could put down every once in awhile, but I was still interested in what was happening. I did enjoy the characters.
