This is a book that was one of my all time favorites as a child. Going back and reading this book as an adult was a little different. Although I found the story to be cute, I feel that it is a bit or a bore for children to read. The only characters the author created that were in the slightest bit intriguing was Floss the sheep dog. There really wasn't a clear message depicted throughout the book besides the old man being a grump. I can go out on a limb and say that the message could possibly be that good things come to those who wait. Floss loved playing soccer with the children, but wasn't allowed to by her owner. At the very end of the book the old man witnessed how excited Floss was when she was playing with the children and finally show more allowed her to continue playing soccer. All in all the book was decent, but could have been a little more exciting. show less
Kim Lewis is a really good story teller. She understands her audience (young children) and does not talk down to them. She also understands Border Collies, and they appear in all her stories, not just as a part of the background, but, if not as the main character, as an important one. But when all is said and done, it's Lewis' beautiful illustrations that make her books a delight for children and adults alike.
This was not my favorite book, but it had a good lesson. Floss was about a collie becoming a sheep herder. It is a coming of age story about how we cannot play forever, at some point we have to do a little work before the play.
A generic aminal story with something ever-so-slightly offputting about the whiff of country house reflected in the level of familiarity with dog breeds children are evidently expected to have.
Cute book. Nice illustrations. The summary tells you everything that is in the book. Simple story.

45 months - I picked this one because of the illustrations and being about a dog it would be a hit with O and it is. A fairly simple story that introduces kids to working dogs. But this city dog also likes to have fun.
