I have a lot of respect for Henry's mom. In some ways I want to be her, with a big porch & yard & trees, and long dresses and bare feet - but I don't want a huge slobbery dog, thank you.
For a "ready to read" children's story this was great. The pictures were good throughout the book, the stories were short but fun to read and if I had small children in my home who were learning to read, I would definitely have more of these books laying around.
"Henry and Mudge In the Sparkle Days" is an easy-to-read chapter book that is part of the "Henry and Mudge" Series by Cynthia Rylant. Although students love reading about the familiar characters of Henry and Mudge, these books are not quality pieces of literature to read aloud in the class, but should be used mostly for when students have time to read to themselves. Each chapter in this specific text is about an adventure that Henry has with his dog Mudge during the winter months, when the snow is sparkling on the ground, hence, "the sparkle days." Rylant uses simple vocabulary and sight words that second graders should be working on. The cute and simple cartoon drawings will help readers to use context clues when stuck on a word. The show more fact that the same characters are repeated in every chapter (and book in this series) will make it easier for students to read because they are already familiarized with the characters. show less

In the winter Henry and his big dog Mudge play in the snow, share a family Christmas dinner, and gather around a crackling winter fireplace. Short chapters good for students K-2 grade
Genre: This is a realistic fiction book because the setting, character and events seem very real, although they never really took place. Henry and Mudge experience the snow together (which they call sparkle days) and they play and have a fun time as friends. The second part was about how Henry's family has Christmas Eve dinner and lets Mudge (the dog) join! Finally, Henry, Mudge and the parents go on winter walks and they talk about how warm and cozy winter is and how fun it is to have snow.
