Description
This book is an exploration of the process and consequences of the campaigns of Alexander the Great of Macedon (who reigned from 336 to 323 BC), focusing on the effect of his monarchy upon the world of his day. A detailed running narrative of the actual campaigns from the Danube to the Indus is complemented and enlarged upon by thematic studies on the reaction in Greece to Macedonian suzerainty, the administration of the empire, the evolution of the Macedonian army and its role as the show more instrument of conquest, and on the origins of the ruler cult. show lessTags

This is the best book I have ever read about Alexander. It's also been cited by various historians I've read as the most authoritative book on Alexander (with the least amount of guessing). Highly recommended. Just note that the first half of the book is a biography of Alexander's campaigns, with the second half discussing various aspects of, and impacts of, his actions while alive. This book also seemed to me to be on the border of popular history and an academic work, which I really liked but some may prefer something more in the popular history line.
Scholarly, mildly negative about Alexander; has a basic sketch of his campaigns followed by treatment of specific themes, some rathe technical. Interesting that he believes by the time Alexander returned from India most of his army was Iranian. I knew Alexander recruited Iranians and othe non-Greeks but not that tey were so significant. However, he is (I think rightly) skeptical than Alexander intended a genuine fusion of the two peoples.
