There are a lot of travel guides out there.
I generally go for the AAA guides for travel in the U.S. They're free to members, regularly updated, and easy to use.
Outside the States, I prefer Fodor's. Yes, they're kind of old-fashioned compared to the Lonely Planet guides, but they're also accurate and reliable.
This particular one I used to bone up on the USVI before my trip in 2002. A good time was had by all.
