After working as a chemical engineer, Wolff began writing plays in 1958. He is one of a group of playwrights who developed their work with the support of Chilean university theaters. His plays most often deal with the demise of the guilt-ridden middle class, but he has abandoned overt realism in favor of a series of dramatic images that resist show more reduction to a simplistic message. Paper Flowers, which, in the translator's words, portrays the "destruction of a bourgeoisie indifferent to its surrounding social problems," is also a chilling portrait of a psychopathic personality and an investigation of the dynamics of human relationships.
