Only the strongest guard the portals and gateways to other realms Kol Hildr had spent the last century battling hellhounds and warlocks who sought to usurp his portal's magic. A mighty shape-shifter with the ability to change into wolf form, Kol made accessing the powerful gateway nearly impossible--unless you were a witch of Kelly Shane's talents. Though an alliance with her compromised show more Kol's very purpose, something about the little witch overwhelmed his fierce, battle-worn soul. Kol runs a bar named Guardian's Keep but more importantly he has spent the last century guarding the portal at the back of the bar. Kol's job has gotten complicated by the appearance of Kelly, a young witch bent on revenge for the death of her friend. Kelly blames Kol for allowing her friend to take the portal to her demise. Unable to trust each other, they find themselves at constant odds even when thrown together by a conspiracy that could unleash horrors unimaginable on Earth.
For the first half of this book Kelly managed to take top place for the most too stupid to live heroine I've ever read about. She was pig headed, abrasive and jumped to conclusions at the drop of a hat, and not in any sort of an endearing way. Likewise, Kol just show more didn't seem to be able to get a clue and the whole multiple misunderstanding plotline was completely taken to the extreme. Despite this the story kept me interested and I plugged along despite the characters and I'm really happy I did. Once Kol and Kelly got their heads on straight things improved greatly and it moved right along. I even wound up liking both characters. In the end I have to say that I did enjoy it even with the rocky start and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this quick read to lovers of paranormal romance. show less

Kol has spent a long time alone guarding a powerful portal to the other worlds. He's a shapeshifter of the werewolf sort. Kelly Shane is a witch and has a score to settle with that portal and it's guardian. However there are others as determined and not as consciencious. Add in a guardian power struggle and you have almost too much to deal with in one book.
It's not to bad, sometimes the sex seems a bit shoehorned in but overall an interesting story. I have to read the earlier story and it will probably explain a bit more about this world that's focussed on Norse Mythology which is a nice change of pace.
