Description

La Anunciación a María by Paul Claudel is a poetic drama exploring the profound and complex nature of love through the lives of its characters. Set in a metaphor-laden narrative, the story follows Violaine, a young woman whose journey embodies themes of sacrifice and spiritual fulfillment. Through symbolic elements like the door, the ring, and leprosy, the play delves into the ideals of love as a transformative force that transcends personal limitations and societal norms. The work show more reflects Claudel's vision of love as an eternal, sacrificial commitment, challenging conventional notions of romance. The play is intended for audiences interested in philosophical and theological explorations of love and human relationships. show less

The Tidings Brought to Mary. Paul Claudel. 1916, 2009. This is a selection along with Camus’ “Caligula” for our next Dipso book club. This was a favorite play of Luigi Giussani, founder of Communion and Liberation, the lay Catholic group I belong to. It is certainly a Catholic play and a play about Love, true Christian love: “Holiness doesn’t come from being stoned by Turks or kissing a leper on his mouth, but by keeping the commandment of God whether it means staying in our own place or mounting higher.” It is a beautiful play but I am not sure it would be of interest to most.

Paul Claudel was a poet, dramatist, essayist, and religious thinker of great power and originality whose works are suffused with his ardent Catholicism. He had a distinguished career in the French consular and diplomatic service, which enabled him to spend many years in the Far East, North and South America, and Europe. Almost all of Claudel's show more work embodies an expression of his deep Roman Catholic faith and is an attempt to share its truth with others. His poetic expression is at once symbolic and lyrical, expressing the joy, beauty, and mystery of existence. Among his most important plays are The City, The Break of Noon, The Tidings Brought to Mary (1912), and The Satin Slipper (1928-1939). (Bowker Author Biography) show less
