Description
Any of show of the fruits of private collecting is an important event, particularly a show of objects from the medieval period. In this country, since the early years of this century, there has been an intense interest in medieval history, archaeology, and works of art. Our universities have encouraged studies in these field, our museums have vigorously pursued the acquisition of objects of the highest quality. Rarely in this span of time, however, have there been opportunities for the show more private collector to display the results of his patient hunting of the rarest pieces of that fascinating epoch which contributed so substantially to our culture. Now is one such opportunity. This show is not only a special and significant event in that it gathers together a splendid array of most beautiful works of art, it also serves as an important building block at the beginning of a new time in the history of The Cloisters, a time in which the institution will seek to become the veritable cente rof medieval studies in the United States. show lessTags
