Roy Fisher was born in Birmingham, England on June 11, 1930. After studying at Birmingham University, he taught at Bordesley College, Birmingham, and Dudley College in the Black Country. From 1972 until his retirement in 1982, he taught American studies at the University of Keele. He was a poet who published numerous collections of poetry show more including The Ship's Orchestra, The Cut Pages, The Thing About Joe Sullivan, The Left-Handed Punch, Birmingham River, The Dow Low Drop: New and Selected Poems, and Standard Midland. He received the Cholmondeley award for poetry in 1981 and a fellowship of the Royal Society of Literature in 2005. He was also a jazz pianist. He died on March 21, 2017 at the age of 86.
