1979

Set against the background of the revolution in Iran and totalitarian China in 1979, the narrator of this short novel takes the reader on a bizarre and grotesque journey to the end of civilisation. It is an interesting and disturbing read.

The first part of the book is mildly interesting. From when he dies through to the end of the adventure with the surveillance cameras it's pretty good, I liked it much more. But then the rest of the book was complete bullshit. This random guy tells the narrator to go to Tibet and walk a round a mountain, AND HE DOES IT! No reason given to him as to why he should go, no reason given to us as to why he decides to do it. The walking to the mountain, and around it, is super boring, even when the narrator joins up with some other people. Finally the Chinese military shows up and arrests everybody, which sounds interesting but quickly fizzles out into nothing. The narrator is put in one of the concentration camps, at some point moves to a show more different one, and eventually the book ends. THAT'S IT. All told in a boring, lifeless prose. One star extra given for the first half of the book, though it doesn't especially deserve it. I want my week of reading back. show less

Somehow disturbing!

Teherán, 1979. La ciudad vive un frenesí difícil de entender, es la víspera de la revolución islámica, el levantamiento de los partidarios del ayatolá Jomeini contra el sha y su régimen occidental. El narrador, un joven diseñador alemán, y su amigo altamente educado, cínico y enfermo, Christopher, viajan con la música de Devo y Blondie a través de Irán hasta Teherán. Los tanques se encuentran en la encrucijada, pero los dos protagonistas no lo ven. Prefieren hablar de sandalias de hombres y fundas de cojines de sofá. Y, por eso, ambos se van al infierno.

1979, inmitten der islamischen Revolution des Ayatollah Khomeinis bereist ein homosexueller Dandy mit seinem abweisenden, bereits schwer kranken Lebensgefährten Christopher Persien und frönt dort einem dekadentem Lebensstil und exzessiven Parties. Als Christopher im Drogenrausch stirbt, macht sich der Protagonist auf nach Tibet, um den mythenumrankten Berg Kailash zu umrunden. Dabei wird er von chinesischen Sicherheitskräften gestellt und in ein Umerziehungslager gesteckt.

Kraft erzählt aus Sicht seines namenslosen Ich-Erzählers die Wandlung vom dekadenten Dandy zum asketischen Maoisten. Die Rahmenhandlung bilden die islamische Revolution und die chinesische Kulturrevolution, doch bleiben diese historischen Wendepunkte stets im show more Hintergrund. Im Vordergrund steht der Ich-Erzähler selbst, der zwar viele Erklärungen schuldig bleibt, seine Wandlung und die diesbezüglichen Erlebnisse aber flüssig wiedergibt. 1979 ist ein Roman, der mehr Fragen aufwirft, als zu beantworten. Kraft beschäftigt sich (und den Leser) darin wie bereits in seinem Meisterwerk "Imperium" mit der (Ver-)wandlung eines Menschen, menschlichen Abgründen und Extremen. show less
