Dragon Wytch

Dragon Wytch is the fourth book in the Sisters of the Moon series, the follow-up of Darkling(3). In Witchling(1) we meet the D'Artigo sisters- Camille, the eldest who is a witch, Delilah, the middle child who is a werecat, and Menolly, the baby of the family who is a vampire.

The plots of Witchling(1), Changeling(2) & Darkling(3) established the confusing existance of the three realms- Otherworld, Earth and the Subteranean Realms and introduces us to a host of otherwordly species from both those found on Earth and those from without. The three D'Artigo sisters and their friends have been fighting to protect their home, Otherworld, and their new home in Seattle (in the Earth realm) from the demon forces of Shadow Wing. There's civil war show more going on back home in Otherworld and there are twelve Spirit Seals hidden on earth that could open the portals between all three realms letting loose the demons of the Sub-realms into the others, destroying all life as we know it.

Returning to Camille as narrorator (she narrorated Witchling) we're picking up with the protection of the realms but there's a whole new cast of characters and troubles. A royal prince of the unicorns has come to give Camille a special gift, one that only she can wield, but first they have to find the pixie who was carrying it who was captured. Morgaine, yes *that* Morgaine, is also on the hunt for this mystical hierloom and she's camped out near Smoky's on Mt. Rainier annoying the crud out of the dragon. She's intent on raising the Earthside fae's courts back to life and needs Camille to help her do it. Then there's Benjamin, a human who has seen visions of a stone and demons, his family thinks he's crazy, but Morio thinks there's more to his visions than the ramblings of a nutcase.

Lots of fighting, plenty of sisterly antics and a sprinkle of Camille and her triad of men makes for a very involved but strangely smooth plot. If you've been following the series and are a fan of Morio and Smoky you will probably really enjoy the face time these two get.

I'll be honest... the first two books in the series didn't quite fully sell me on Galenorn as a fiction writer. Conceptually they were good but I needed to see a stronger voice coming through. Darkling it started to show and Dragon Wytch showed how very much she's grown as a fiction writer. I'm really happy with how far along she's come and how well she's crafted not only a really good urban fantasy realm and characters, but at how very well she's kept them. Smoky fans might argue a bit after reading this book, he did seem slightly less dragonly in this one, but I think that was done intentionally because of where Galenorn went with him and Camille.

This is the one book in the series thus far that I was really looking forward to and it didn't disappoint. The series has gone full circle and this book starts back over with Camille who just happens to be my favorite of the D'Artigo sisters. Camille is now in a triad with her men, Trillian, the Svartan looked down upon by most of the fae and Morio, a Japanese Fox Demon. Camille doesn't do vanilla and is attracted to dangerous men/creatures. That being said, her love life just seems to get more-and-more complicated. In prior books, Camille was bound to a week long contract of debauchery with Smoky the dragon in exchange for his help. I was sooooo afraid that the scene would play out in one of the other sister's books and I wouldn't get show more to read the details. Though it was just one night instead of the full week, the intimate scene between Camille and Smoky was everything I hoped it would be. Smoking hot!!! Plus you get to see an entirely different side of the dragon. Not only is is incredibly gorgeous, he is loving in a way dragon's aren't supposed to be and has major skills. I never thought hair could be so sexy! We also got to meet a unicorn in this book which I thought would be super cheesy but wasn't. The storyline was well written and I actually liked him. Due to a precious and rare gift given to Camille by the unicorn we got to go back in time and see her go through her coronation with the Moon Mother. That helped to understand her power a little better and that it was predicted that she would be very powerful someday. I also enjoyed that for once the sisters didn't necessarily end up on top and that the storyline with the demon and third spirit seal will roll over into the next book. Now I have to get through the next two books (not that I'm complaining cause I like the other sisters as well) so that I came get back to Camille and her harem of men. Can't wait to see Trillian's reaction to the arrangement between Camille, Morio and Smoky. Loved it!!! show less

I really hope that this book isn't a sign for things to come because I absolutely loved the first three books. The books rotate narration between the three sisters and this was the second book with Camille narrating. She grated at my nerves constantly. After following the author on twitter for a bit I couldn't help but notice mary sue comparisons. Perhaps it is just that Camille is just far too girlie for my liking. Her relationships aren't an issue for me at all, so it isn't that element of her character. There was also a glaringly obvious editing error at one point which always makes me wince. Finally, a book series that started out being highly original is beginning to draw some very similar ideas from another author. I still love show more the world, and other characters, and thankfully due to the narration method I can just grit my teeth through the 'Camille' books. show less

Camille D’Artigo is the protagonist in this book, facing the every growing and worrying effects of the war against Shadow Wing and the civil war in Otherworld – a war that is now affecting their family as well as bringing chaos to the Otherworld, allowing all kinds of monsters to break through the portals and wreak havoc on an unsuspecting Earth.

Now she has a unicorn gifting her with an artefact of legend of immense power that may be one of their best hopes against Shadow Wing – except it’s been lost and it’ll work just as well for their enemies as against them.

And there’s a new spirit seal to find – and this one is being hunted by a lethal and cunning Rakshasa, far more dangerous than any of the other demons they have had show more to face. Added to that, Morgaine is back and the ancient, power-hungry sorceress has her own plans involving Titania, the long defunct Seelie queen

To complicate all of that – Smokey, the ancient and mighty dragon, is demanding her attention as well, as per their agreement. But Smokey wants into her heart and not just her bed – which is difficult with her current lovers to take into account.

My only major complaint with this book – in fact the series in general, is its poor pacing and the easily distracted protagonists. I think this book is especially bad for it. There’s one moment in particular that stands out. They are trying to find the Pixie with the Black Unicorn’s horn before anyone else, since this is an artefact with massive, incredible power. It simply cannot fall into the wrong hands. Menolly, after working at the bar, gets a lead on the horn (and it turns out to be true) so she goes home and…

… watches Jerry Springer with Delilah, waiting for Camille to get up rather than waking her. When she does get up (early because something else entirely interrupts her) she, Delilah and Menolly start weeding the garden. No, really – the horn could right now be heading into demon hands but they’re doing some gardening. Then they have breakfast. Then Iris regales them with a tale from when she was a House Sprite in Finland. Then Camille potty trains their pet gargoyle. And I am sat there reading this book and restraining the urge to yell at it because the world is supposed to be on the brink of collapse, demons are supposed to be invading, civil war is breaking out in Otherland, the world is in Serious Peril so some urgency may be required.

An additional problem with that is it makes me less happy with the variety of plots. We have a lot of different threads in this book – we have the Rakshasa and his minions looking for the spirit seal, we have the Unicorn and the horn, we have the problem of the Cryptos and the unguarded portals, we have Morgaine and Titania, we have Camille with Smokey as well as big insights into Camille’s past. All of these plot lines add to the overall story and are wonderful threads of the plot that really go together well. And individually I like each one. They really add to the richness of the world and the much greater sense of the coming battle – but because the pacing is already slowed down by random domesticity it makes me less patient with anything that might stop the main plot line actually moving forwards.

Oh ho ho! The battle is heating up in Yasmine Galenorn's paranormal 'Otherworld" series with the release of her latest, "Dragon Wytch". This series which relies heavily on Faery lore but also includes demons, dragons, goblins, trolls, vampires, shapeshifters, and also pulls in magic creatures from other cultures is kick ass!! The race to retrieve the third spirit seal is on and Camille the witch will need every one of her allies to come out alive.

This series has some serious sexual tension and flirts wildly with the boundary between mainstream and eroticism. Camille is in a Triad, and now the dragon she nicknamed Smoky is pursuing her for his mate! The fact that he is one of the sexiest creatures in any form she's ever seen isn't show more helping her decision-making capabilities! After all, wouldn't he be more likely to assist her and her allies if he was her lover? Decisions, decisions...

If you are a fantasy, urban fantasy, or paranormal fan who appreciates detailed worlds, interesting lore, and hot sex...this is definitely a series you should be looking into. This is the 4th book, the previous being, from the top: "Witchling", "Changeling", and "Darkling". The next release "Night Huntress" is scheduled for release in January of 2009...I'll be waiting. show less

I don't think I enjoy the books in this series focused on Camille as much as those focused on the other sisters. The books from Camille's POV tend to be a bit too heavy on the relationship dynamics between her and men, and less on the actual plot. To have characters saying things like (paraphrasing): "We can go without sleep to focus on the bad guys and solve our problems because people are dying and what's sleep next to that?" doesn't make sense when a good portion of that time is then spent on sex instead. Another series moving toward porn instead of plot. Meh.

I went straight into the fourth book after reading Darkling and this time the story is narrated by Camille. She's a witch dedicated to The Moon, but as she's half human her spells have a tendency to backfire. Her story is a little complicated as she is a little free with the men. Her main partner is Trillian who is absent on a dangerous mission for the majority of the book. Along with Trillian she has a triad with Morio, a fox demon. Her third lover is Smokey who shifts into a dragon with whom she has a pact. In this instalment he finally claims his first night with her and she gets to "ride a dragon"!

The main plot centres around Camille receiving a visit from a unicorn and the legendary black unicorn horn to help in the fight against show more Shadowing (the main over arcing villain) and a powerful Earthside demon named Karvanak who is after a newly surfaced spirit seal. Also in the background you have Morgaine trying to resurrect the Faerie Courts and become Queen herself. If it sounds complicated, it is. This was one thing I disliked about the novel, there was too much plot and not really enough time to sort through it all.

Camille is my least favourite of the three sisters. I don't really get where she is coming from which I think is part of the problem. She is half strong and powerful, owning her sexuality. On the other hand she seems quite happy to let her men control her and tie her down. Every now and then she will throw a hissy fit and one will be there there little Witch, don't get your knickers in a twist. On the plus side the book had a unicorn in it (he could have been in it more though, again too much plot and not enough time to spend with the characters besides Camille) so I'm sold! show less
