Het boek geeft een goed overzicht van de politieke geschiedenis van alle landen waar Chinezen deel uitmaken van de macht.

Hij maakt niet de vergissing om de politiek in China, Singapore en vroeger ook Taiwan enigszins te verdedigen. Het gaat of ging om mensenrechten ontkennende regimes zonder twijfel. China spant daarbij de kroon met rond 80 miljoen doden sinds het communisme aan de macht is.

Buruma geeft wel erg de indruk bekeringsijver te verwarren met het onderzoek van politieke geschiedenis. Als kleinzoon van een prediker verkeert hij daarmee in het gezelschap van F.Fukuyama.
