The most notable aspect of this children's story is the fact that it is written in both English and Spanish. The inclusion of this story, the culture, and the language of the culture brings new light and meaning to this book. It's a book that becomes multifunctional. Students who are learning English (or Spanish) can read this and reference their native language to help build an understanding of the novel and the language. This incredible read about Mexican culture and how heavily music plays a role in it is something that every student should read. I know for a fact that in my future classrooms, this will be both a read-aloud book and a story that my students can read independently.
In this story, a young boy finds his tata's guitar in the garage, and his tata teachers him how to play it. He is so excited, and in the end his tata tells him he's going to pass the guitar down to him, as his tata had before him.
This is a story about how a grandfather tells his grandson about how he loves to play his guitar. One of the things he tells him, is how he played a song for his wife, the grandson's grandmother.
Great book for family time

Readers will treasure this bilingual book about the transmission of musical heritage
Dust-covered boxes, old and forgotten furniture, and discarded treasures intrigue a young boy exploring his grandfather’s garage. In the midst of this mine, he makes a discovery more fascinating than a treasure: a guitar with a neck rising like a "black swan."

"When Tata opens the guitar case that once belonged to his tata, a wealth of musical memories entrance the boy as the sound of the guitar strings transform "musty moths into beautiful butterflies." Tata tells the boy about the posadas at Christmas, birthday melodies and even shares his memory of a special moonlight serenade.

As his fingers glide along the frets, Tata paints the boy a picture of a show more world long-past. And with his grandfather’s help, the boy will learn to create his own musical memories for generations to come."
