It's a decent low-level history of programming languages up to about the early 1980s. (At a glance, I don't see anything that is obviously from the 1990 revision.) I can leave the illustrated simplified explanations, but for a 20,000 word history of programming languages, it's pretty good. The pictures are invaluable (i.e. not found on Wikipedia), especially the Tower of Babel Programming Languages cover.
