Ham Sok Han is little known outside Korea, but in his own country he is a kind of Korean Gandhi with a vision for his people and has sizable following among the younger generation. His spiritual history of Korea, which has for the first time been admirably translated and edited, is a unique offering and deserves a wide reading. It is a book that commands the facts of the whole sweep of Korea's history, but at the same time uses the concept of suffering to light up this procession of events. Douglas Steere
