With two mysteries to solve, Frank and Joe must climb aboard their iceboat the Sea Gull to reach Cabin Island, where a belligerent stranger orders them off. Sabotage to the boat, danger to themselves, and a ghostly prowler do not daunt the Hardy boys in their search for Johnny Jefferson and for clues to stolen antique medals. How the teenage investigators outwit a ruthless foe and succeed in solving both mysteries makes for mounting suspense in this brisk-paced adventure.
As Hardy Boys go, this one was ok. I don't think I've read another one that more perfectly represented teenage boys, haha! The idea that 2 teenage boys can overpower a grown man always cracks me up. Good overall, not in the favorite list but i did enjoy it!
The adventure begins with Elroy Jefferson offering Frank and Joe the use of his remote cabin over the Christmas holidays and asking them to solve two mysteries. The first is the disappearance of a collection of valuable medals some years previously and the second, the rather more recent disappearance of his grandson who has gone missing from boarding school. Along with Chet and Biff, the Hardys are soon up to their necks in trouble and snow on the eponymous island.
Unlike the preceding few volumes in the series, the boys aren't up against great gangs of organised criminals but a single, determined thief and his two scheming henchmen. This, combined with the winter setting give the book a differerent feel to the earlier books. The action show more is just as fast paced however, the only difference being a more snowy aspect. Instead of speedboat chases, it's iceboat crashes, and a snowstorm so powerful it threatens to bury them in their cabin. A great example of the early series, this is again just different enough to stop the whole series from feeling overtly formulaic. show less
Another adventure by the Hardy Boys and their pals....this one on an island....in winter....with iceboats.....and, of course, a bad guy.......still enjoy these, in spite of their wholesome sappiness......just great easy fun.......feeling content!
While on Christmas vacation, the Hardy boys find themselves in two mysteries. One is the disappearance of the grandson of their host, and the other is the theft of a collection of antique medals. The investigation pits them against a ghostly prowler and mysterious strangers.
Another amazing mystery that proves with a little hard work and a bit of skill and luck anything can be accomplish.

This book is a dual mystery the ability to find a missing boy and the mystery of the stolen medals. When the Hardy's are the case we know there is nothing worry about.
Highly recommend this book. If you have to read one Hardy Boys book (after the first one) read this one. It is reallllly good.

Franklin W. Dixon Franklin W. Dixon is actually a pseudonym for any number of ghostwriters who have had the distinction of writing stories for the Hardy Boys series. The series was originally created by Edward Stratmeyer in 1926, the same mastermind of the Nancy Drew detective series, Tom Swift, the Rover Boys and other characters. While show more Stratmeyer created the outlines for the original series, it was Canadian writer Leslie McFarlane who breathed life to the stories and created the persona Franklin W. Dixon. McFarlane wrote for the series for over twenty years and is credited with success of the early collection of stories. As the series became more popular, it was pared down, the format changed and new ghostwriters added their own flavor to the stories. Part of the draw of the Hardy Boys is that as the authors changed, so to did the times and the story lines. While there is no one true author of the series, each ghostwriter can be given credit for enhancing the life of this series and never unveiling that there really is no Franklin W. Dixon.
