Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White: Thoughts on Religion, Morality, and Politics

Description

Everyone agrees that America is polarized, with ever-hardening positions held by people less and less willing to listen to one another. No one agrees on what to do about it. One solution that hasn't yet been tried, says Adam Hamilton, is for thinking persons of faith to model for the rest of the country a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us. Hamilton rejects the easy assumptions and sloppy analysis of black and white thinking, show more seeking instead the truth that resides on all sides of the issues, and offering a faithful and compassionate way forward. He writes, "I don't expect you to agree with everything I've written. I expect that in the future even I won't agree with everything I've written here. The point is not to get you to agree with me, but to encourage you to think about what you believe. In the end I will be inviting those of you who find this book resonates with what you feel is true, to join the movement to pursue a middle way between the left and the right - to make your voices heard - and to model for our nation and for the church, how we can listen, learn, see truth as multi-sided, and love those with whom we disagree." Mr Hamilton's work here is well intentioned but falls quite short of his attempt to supposedly create a centrist position. The centrist position he suggests is a muddled solution that offers nothing short of muddled reasons. First off, he fails to define what exactly Christianity is. Second, his definition of what the gospel message is so muddled & contradictory that he seems unaware of the serious problems this poses for readers. Third, In order for him to hold to his "centrist" position, he must water down serious questions that he would rather not answer. It takes him ten chapters before he finally comes to the question of Jesus' role in Christian faith. Even here he gives a "muddled" answer about who Jesus is. His objection to show more "labels" is duly noted yet he ends up using "labels" to defend his position. The examples of individuals like "Fred Phelps" who deserves to be labeled as a madman, are questionable to say the least and are poor uses for examples. The book is unhelpful in many ways. There are few good points here & there but these are bogged down by extensive disjointed & over generalizations. show less
An interesting look at trying to find the middle ground, the gray area, in many polarizing issues.
